Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in every modern cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The wider security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of official operations, from transport usage to communication habits.
